“Between Two Worlds” by Zainab Salbi

I’m finishing up a book called Between Two Worlds: Escape From Tyranny: Growing Up in the Shadow of Saddam, written by Women for Women International founder Zainab Salbi (with Laurie Becklund), and I simply cannot recommend it enough.

Salbi was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and while she was growing up, her father was ordered to work as Saddam Hussein’s personal pilot. Her memoir describes what life was like for Iraqis under the dictator’s rule, including the psychological abuse that she and her family suffered as Hussein and his supporters controlled their every move. Also, you can present the Care Card at more than 700 participating retailers in Arizona between Oct. 14 and Oct. 23 to receive a 20 percent discount on your purchase or service.

Spirit Beauty Lounge

Spirit Beauty Lounge is one of my new favorite online retailers for green cosmetics and beauty products. Not only do they specialize in organic and natural makeup, skincare, gifts and more, but they also go a step further by supporting great organizations that believe in the same ideals, groups such as 1% For the Planet and Carbonfund.org.

The Spirit Beauty Lounge facilities are even powered 100 percent by Green-e certified renewable wind and hydro energy. They must have some seriously green-minded folks over there! Read moreRead more

ONEHOPE Wine in Arizona

Have you heard of ONEHOPE Wine? It’s a charity label by winemaker Rob Mondavi Jr. that donates 50 percent of its profits to charities, such as organizations that support the environment, our troops, autism research and others.

And because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Starwood hotels in Arizona have committed to serving ONEHOPE Wine’s Chardonnay throughout the month, with 50 percent of the profits from that particular wine going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Pretty cool. Read moreRead more

Kate Spade “Hand in Hand” Bangle and Women for Women International

Last week, for work, I was doing some research into the history of the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I spent a portion of that time reading about the latest developments at Women for Women International, an organization I first heard of when I interviewed Lauren Bush about her Spring 2010 collection for Lauren Pierce Atelier.

For that collection, Lauren had worked with women survivors of war in the DRC, women who, as participants of the Women for Women job skills training programs, had actually dyed the fabrics for the dresses to earn an income for themselves.

Women for Women is a non-profit global organization that comes to the aid of women who have been the victims of conflict in countries such as the DRC, as well as Iraq, Kosovo, Rwanda, Nigeria and others. Read moreRead more
