simply wood rings

Simply Wood Rings

I recently discovered Simply Wood Rings, which are created from salvaged wood and other environmentally friendly sources. The rings are made in a studio in Chicago according to a process which maintains the natural structure of the wood, drawing strength from its grain, rather than cutting against it as you see with many other wooden rings. Tiffany & Co.

Circulating: RUBEDO by Tiffany & Co.

This year Tiffany & Co. celebrates its 175th anniversary, and in anticipation of the milestone, it created a rosy new metal, called rubedo, designed to have the appeal of gold, silver and copper, all rolled into one. I was granted a preview of the new metal — and the Tiffany 1837 designs which will feature it — for my feature in the March/April issue of Jetset Magazine. Read moreRead more

JewelMint

If you’re looking for a little retail therapy for yourself, or if you’re in search of a gift for a jewelry-loving lady, I’d recommend JewelMint, a refreshingly affordable collaboration between actress Kate Bosworth and stylist Cher Coulter.

If you remember my post about StyleMint, the concept is the same. You take a quiz to determine your style preferences (classic, edgy, romantic …) and then JewelMint displays your best matches every time you sign in. Read moreRead more

Heavy Metal Jewelry, page 1

Circulating: Heavy Metal

I had a lot of fun — too much, probably — curating jewelry for the article called “Heavy Metal,” included in the January/February 2012 issue of Jetset Magazine, featuring the one and only Katy Perry on the cover.

Of the nine individual pieces included, every single one is glamorous, edgy and irresistibly “rock ‘n’ roll.” Read moreRead more

Circulating: As Good As Gold

Is your jewelry worth its weight in gold? I have an article in the September/October 2011 issue of Jetset Magazine called “As Good As Gold,” featuring pieces of gold jewelry that are worth their weight, plus a whole lot more, because they were made using recycled gold and responsibly harvested gemstones.

Spotlighted designers include: Amber Marie Bently, alkemie, Dawes Design and Ruff&Cut. Read moreRead more

Vintage Dior Button Rings

My friend Christine gave me this gorgeous ring as a present. It’s made from a vintage Dior button, and it came from the super-cute Vintage by Misty boutique, which I’ve written about before.

The ring is a fun way to add a little vintage something-something to any outfit — I’ve worn it with jeans and a feminine top, as well as with cocktail dresses.

And with the button’s face polished so that it’s extra shiny, plus the uniquely wrapped silver wire that forms the actual ring part (additional photo after the jump), the piece garners a lot of attention. People take a few moments to try to make out the letters before they eventually smile and say, “Oh, Dior!” And then when I tell them it’s a button, well that just makes it all the more fun. Brushed Gold Inverted Bangle by Bauble Bar

I recently discovered Bauble Bar, an online jewelry retailer with a lot of variety and very little sticker shock.

Take a look at this simple and elegant inverted bangle by the Bauble Bar. I saw a photo of Malin Akerman wearing something like it at a Tommy Hilfiger event and thought, “Hm, I wonder where I can find a cheaper version of that …” Because of course I expected it to cost something ridiculous, like $4,725.39.

As it turns out, this bangle from the Bauble Bar is the exact one Malin is wearing in the photo. And guess what — it’s only $22. Read moreRead more

EmersonMade.

I recently stumbled across EmersonMade., an apparel and accessories line created and managed by Emerson, along with her partner and husband, Ryan.

Saying she finds inspiration in books, memories, travels and old films, Emerson makes clothes that are kind of classic, preppy, retro, romantic, and most of all, fun.

My of-the-moment favorite is the super mod black dress pictured at left, but read on for a few more snapshots of what else EmersonMade. is up to. Read moreRead more

Tiny Pretty Jewelry by Edor

I really enjoy making my jewelry purchases through Etsy. Not only because I like supporting independent jewelry designers, but also because you can often find some very cool stuff for a fraction of what you’d pay at an established boutique or department store.

My latest purchase was the “Honeydrops” necklace by edor. The designer, Cindy, specializes in “tiny pretty” jewelry, and I fell in love with her charming, pint-sized treasures. Read moreRead more

Circulating: Dreamweavers

I have a feature entitled “Dreamweavers” in the Phoenix edition of 944 magazine this month.

If you are (or might one day be) in the midst of planning a wedding, the article lays out advice from five different professionals in the Valley, all relevant to making your big day a perfect day: stationer Lydia Beaulieu of Paperjoy, jewelry designer Susan Helmich of OPUS – The Art of Fine Jewelry, cake designer Julia Baker of Julia Baker Confections, master tailor Aladdin Dimas of Artful Tailoring, and chief designers Meghan Lawlor and Jenny Pinto of Lillian Lottie Couture. Kate Spade “Hand in Hand” Bangle and Women for Women International

Last week, for work, I was doing some research into the history of the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I spent a portion of that time reading about the latest developments at Women for Women International, an organization I first heard of when I interviewed Lauren Bush about her Spring 2010 collection for Lauren Pierce Atelier.

For that collection, Lauren had worked with women survivors of war in the DRC, women who, as participants of the Women for Women job skills training programs, had actually dyed the fabrics for the dresses to earn an income for themselves.

Women for Women is a non-profit global organization that comes to the aid of women who have been the victims of conflict in countries such as the DRC, as well as Iraq, Kosovo, Rwanda, Nigeria and others. Read moreRead more
