Circulating: Beverly Hills

My six-page round-up of where to eat, sleep, play, shop and relax in Beverly Hills was published in the March/April issue of Jetset Magazine and highlights some of the playgrounds of the rich and famous in the 90210. Read moreRead more

Alta Coffee Warehouse in Newport Beach

During my weekend in Newport Beach in September, I got my morning coffee and breakfast at the same place every day: the Alta Coffee Warehouse.

This was the coziest coffee house/restaurant I’ve ever visited. In the ’80s the place was converted from an old bookstore into a coffee roasting warehouse, and then eventually a restaurant too. (The “warehouse” part is a little misleading, because the amount of space open to customers is teeny tiny — but I mean that in a good way.) Read moreRead more

Bear Flag Fish Company

While in Newport Beach over Labor Day weekend, we ate at the Bear Flag Fish Company, a favorite eatery and fish market among locals since 2007.

If you plan on making a meal here, the place is pretty tiny — there are only a few tables inside and a few more outside on the patio. But what it lacks in space, Bear Flag makes up for in variety and taste.

On the website, they list exactly where all their fresh fish and other stock come from: tilapia, snapper, grouper, albacore, tuna, swordfish, lobster, shrimp, rock shrimp, scallops and more. You name it, they’ve offered it. Read moreRead more

Whale Watching in Newport Beach

Image via Newport Landing Whale Watching

Over Labor Day weekend, a group of friends and I drove from Phoenix to Newport Beach, Calif., for some ocean time and cooler temps.

Twelve of us stayed in a rental home right on the beach on Balboa Peninsula, where everyone gets around using beach cruisers and longboards, and where you can practically taste the salt in the air. (In a good way.)

One of the (very few) activities I made plans for ahead of time was whale watching, since I’d never been before, and well, being driven around on a boat in the Pacific for a few hours didn’t sound like a bad deal. Read moreRead more

Osha Thai Noodle Cafe in San Francisco

Back in June, when I visited friends in San Francisco, one of the places we ate was at Osha Thai Noodle Cafe on Geary Street in the Tenderloin neighborhood.

The restaurant group actually has seven Osha Thai restaurants throughout San Francisco area, with all the other six supposedly being a little classier than this location, which has “Cafe” tacked onto the end of its name.

But who needs all the snobbery when it comes to good Thai food, right? Certainly not me! And this place was a 100-percent perfect choice for our dinner that evening. Read moreRead more

Om Shan Tea in San Francisco

Last weekend I visited friends in San Francisco, where the locals seem to be utterly spoiled for choice when it comes to incredible places to eat and drink.

Just before I had to catch my flight back to Phoenix, we made our last stop at a very laid-back and interesting teahouse called Om Shan Tea, located in Mission.

The place, with rustic and eclectic decor, serves fine teas and organic food, and sells tea accessories, ceramics, incense and other curiosities as well. Read moreRead more

Could Cloning Giant Trees Offset Climate Change?

I read an interesting story in “The New York Times” recently about a group that wants to clone giant redwoods and giant sequoias — some of the tallest and oldest trees in the world — and then plant “millions of them” in order to stop, and then eventually reverse, the negative effects of climate change.

The group working on this operation is the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, and the organization’s co-founder, David Milarch, told the newspaper: “Everyone knows the problem, everyone knows the bad news. This is the solution.” Read moreRead more
